<p>The first thing to get straight regarding the Isabel de los rios Diet Solution Program is that as the title suggests it&#8217;s not actually a diet! It&#8217;s not about losing weight quickly through reducing carbs, calories or fat but more about lifestyle change. It&#8217;s about putting an end to yo-yo dieting and finding a path to health. In fact, the introduction to the Diet Solution program manual makes it quite clear that health is the priority and the program should in no way be considered a temporary diet fix!</p>

<p>That said, if you are looking for a quick way to lose weight and revert back to your old eating habits (good or bad) then the Diet Solution Program is probably not for you. It took Isabel De Los Rios a good 3 years to adopt all the principles presented in the manuals and from the outset she recommends you take it at your own pace. The goal is to attain good health with the side effect of losing weight and not to lose weight while negatively impacting your health. The difference with this program (I&#8217;m not using the word diet here) and most other diets is that the principles you adopt are designed to stay with you for life, hence the name &#8220;diet solution&#8221;. The principles you adopt are entirely up to you and you introduce them at your own pace. It&#8217;s not about giving up the things you like but being able to recognise where they fit in your meal plan without impacting your health or weight.</p>

<h2>Getting the Right Mindset</h2>

<p>Before we can adopt anything new we need to have the right mindset, and in Chapter 1 the Diet Solution Program suggests using positive affirmations to accomplish this. For myself I think this chapter is a little short on material. When making big lifestyle changes it all starts in the mind. To quote &#8220;You are what you think about and not what you think you are&#8221;! If you are constantly dwelling on the negative aspects of body image etc you will keep getting the same results. You literally have to change your mind to change your circumstances and positive affirmations are just one way of doing this. Without developing new habits over extended periods of time it is difficult to keep old habits at bay. You have to be comfortable with the changes you make, so clearly having the right mindset is a key step in making any progress.</p>
<h2>The Key Steps to a Healthy Eating Plan</h2>
<p>One of the main pitfalls of many diets is that they don&#8217;t consider a person&#8217;s metabolism type. In the words of the author &#8220;the same-diet-for-everyone approach is simply not effective&#8221;. People not only have different rates of metabolism they can also be intolerant to certain types of food. Think of the <a href="http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/1999/03/990326061953.htm" target="_blank">African Americans&#8217; sensitivity to salt</a> or the comparison of <a href="http://www.foodreactions.org/intolerance/lactose/prevalence.html" target="_blank">lactose intolerance</a> between Northern Europeans and the people of South East Asia. We all know someone who can eat fast/processed foods all day and not put on an ounce of weight. At the same time there are those of us who gain weight without too much effort! In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, knowing the types of food you can and can&#8217;t eat is extremely important.</p>

One of key differences between the Diet Solution program and other diets is the initial step of learning your own metabolism type. From this you can create your personal meal plan and choose the best foods to accomplish your goals. These steps are outlined in chapter 2 and the section about choosing the best foods is well worth the read. My only criticism (see <strong><a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com/anti-aging-secrets-advice-from-nature">anti aging secrets advice from nature</a></strong>) would be to advise against too much animal protein in our diet. Yes, you can classify it as natural, in other words unprocessed, but is animal protein really healthy for humans?</p>
<h2>Finding Your Metabolism Type</h2>
<p>In chapter 3 of the diet solution manual the different metabolism types are described. In a separate manual (one of the downloadable products) you are asked a series of questions to determine your own metabolism type. Once you have determined your type you can use the information in chapter 3 to determine which foods you should be eating and therefore create an appropriate meal plan. The main point of the exercise is for you to find the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats for losing weight and achieving optimal health.</p>
<h2>Calories and Common Misconceptions</h2>
<p>In chapter 4 the author does a good job of clearing up some common misconceptions about calories. How, for instance, by eating the wrong combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fat you can end up losing more weight in the form of lean body mass rather than fat &#8211; this just highlights the importance of understanding your metabolism type.</p>
<p>There is one statement to the effect that having too few calories may cause serious health problems. In extreme cases I&#8217;m sure this is true but elsewhere there is strong evidence that a <strong><a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com/a-calorie-restriction-diet-and-longevity" target="_blank">calorie restriction diet increases longevity</a></strong>. I think its important to understand that it&#8217;s more to do with where the calories a coming from. A low calorie diet rich in complex carbohydrates (vegetables, fruits etc) is going to have an entirely different impact on your health than a low calorie diet based on the simple carbohydrates indicative of junk food etc!</p>
<p>Although this diet is not about calories, they are used to determine the correct number of servings of each food type for each meal. There follows a simple weight loss formula to calculate your daily calorie intake. The book does say that you won&#8217;t need to think about calories again but I think this might be a mistake. A key term in the formula is your current weight. As you lose weight your daily calorie allowance will fall and correspondingly your serving allowance. If you  carry a lot of weight you naturally burn more calories so it follows that you would expect to consume less calories as your weight falls.</p>
<h2>Planning Daily Meals</h2>
<p>Chapter 5 of the manual begins with meal planning. Once you have established your metabolism type and worked out your daily calorie requirements you can use the success journal (an additional download) to not only create your meal plans but monitor your progress. I know from experience with goal setting etc that you are far more likely to be successful by recording activities and monitoring results in a daily journal. By recording how you feel during the day, you can fine tune your meal plan until you&#8217;re always feeling satiated and energised.</p>
<p>The information provided to create your meal plans is well documented in both the allowable servings chart and the food choices chart. You are taken through each step to create your meal plan which is initially recorded in the success journal.  There are a number of example meal plans (based on metabolism type) to help you on the way.</p>
<p>Having created your meal plan you have finished with section one of the diet solution manual.</p>
<p>Section 2 of the manual is a comprehensive guide to choosing the best foods for your diet plan and contains some useful guides and charts. It contains a lot of information that you could probably find on the Web but even so is a well  structured complement to the rest of the manual.</p>
<h2>Summing Up</h2>
<p>Overall the Diet Solution Program provides good value for money but will take a little effort to implement. Although the Diet Solution Program manual is at the heart of the product, a number of complimentary books are available for download, not least among them a complete set of meal plans, a shopping guide and a book of recipes. I personally opted for some additional downloads and I&#8217;m quite impressed with both the recipe book of soups and the recipe book of salads.</p>
<p>It goes without saying that whatever type of diet you choose there will always be some conflicting information about what you should and shouldn&#8217;t eat! The good thing about this program is that it&#8217;s flexible enough to accomodate your own preferences and beliefs. The fact that you fine tune your meal plans to leave you feeling great and full of energy is not a bad start if you intend the <strong><a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com/recommends/dietsolutionprogram" target="_blank">Diet Solution Program</a></strong> to be a lifetime experience.</p>

<p>What would we become and how would we look if we could rise above the mind and the games it plays?</p>
<p>Perhaps one such man who achieved this enlightened state was the Comte de Saint Germain. Voltaire said of him &#8220;A man who knows everything and who never dies&#8221;. For indeed, records suggest that for nearly 100 years he kept the appearance of a man between forty and fifty.</p>
<p>Origin unknown the Comte St Germain disappeared without trace. It was if the deception of his extraordinary power over the aging process became too much to bear in a world that was not ready for the secret he possessed!</p>
<p>Many believe he knew the secret of the philosophers stone, that which turns base metals into gold and bestows the user with the gift of immortality. I sometimes wonder if the reality was much simpler!</p>
<p>Could it be that the Comte St Germain was an extremely conscious individual. Like many before him and many after, his power of longevity was simply related to the degree of consciousness he leveraged in his life?</p>
<p>The answer we shall one day know but even without positive proof it is difficult to argue against the power of consciousness.</p>
<p>So, how do we access this manna from heaven, this greatest of gifts? Let&#8217;s look at some methods for bringing consciousness into your life.<br />

<h3>Meditation</h3>

It&#8217;s difficult to put into words how one feels during deep meditation as the experience is beyond anything words can describe. But, what can be said is that meditation is a practice that develops the ability to perceive and know consciousness, a blissful inner peace that the majority of people rarely experience.</p>
<p>Unfortunately in the west, thinking we know better, the idea of meditation is often considered &#8216;off the wall&#8217; &#8211; not to be taken seriously and a waste of time. But today, even science would disagree with this notion!</p>
<p>It has been positively proved that for meditators, heart disease is 80% lower and cancer is 50% lower. Meditators visit the doctor less frequently and there is also evidence that meditation slows down the ageing process. In his book, &#8216;The Relaxation Response&#8217;, Dr. Herbert Benson&#8217;s research showed that some of the direct effects of meditation included slower heartbeat and breathing, reduced oxygen consumption and increased skin resistance.</p>
<p><strong>Meditation is the perfect antidote to stress!</strong></p>
<p>When practiced regularly, meditators find a certain &#8216;flow&#8217; in their everyday activities. Everything is achieved with much less effort and increasing awareness. Synchronicity is the order of the day.</p>
<p>These are moments of awakening &#8211; a realisation of how life is meant to be lived. Meditation really is one of the great secrets of longevity!</p>
<h3>Living in the Moment</h3>
<p>Have you ever noticed the countless thoughts that cross your mind?</p>
<p>If you have, then for a brief moment you became aware. In a fleeting moment you experienced that which is beyond thought, the &#8220;I&#8221; that transcends identity, the true source of pure consciousness.</p>
<p>On the whole we are wrapped up in our thoughts and identify with them in the mistaken belief that thoughts are what we are! This gives rise to separation in the sense our thoughts differ from everyone else&#8217;s. The true self though, is the observer of these thoughts. It is something clearly beyond the limitations of space and time.</p>
<p>The idea of separation, past and future are generated by thought in order for us to make sense of everything. Thought therefore gives rise to psychological time and determines how we age.</p>
<p>Simply put, the more our thoughts dwell in the past or the future, the quicker we age! When we live in the moment the less credence we give to time, the less we age.</p>
<p>Start to live in the moment by becoming aware of the thoughts you are having. Notice how most of these thoughts are thoughts about the past or the future. Observe, how they generally stop when you become aware. Now, take this opportunity to give attention to the moment.</p>

<h3>Body Awareness</h3>
<p>Consciousness pervades every cell of the body. You need only become aware of it to tap its enormous power.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s unfortunate that many believe you have to work at being a conscious individual. But, the reality is, the only thing that blocks you accessing this infinite power source is your own ego. Thoughts about yourself and your judgement of others is the ego&#8217;s way of preventing awareness.</p>
<p>If we would just allow our minds to settle, the way would be open to allow consciousness in.</p>
<p>If we can harness the full potential of consciousness through awareness then why do we find it so difficult?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s because our ego is in control. It wants to perpetuate the belief of separation, of past and future! It won&#8217;t let go without a fight. But the irony is we don&#8217;t have to fight it!</p>
<p>All we have to do is to become aware of its activity and then direct attention to the present.</p>
<p>One good way of doing this is to become aware of your body. Feeling the aliveness of your being brings you into the present and the source of all our power.</p>
<p>You can use this power to hold back the signs of aging. Not by &#8216;doing&#8217; anything. Rather, just being aware!<br />

Because, in terms of human development, most of the progress with regard to life expectancy has occurred over the last hundred years the argument goes that aging couldn&#8217;t have evolved genetically else how is it possible we can expect to live much longer today!</p>
<p>The fact is, vaccines, antibiotics, clean water and other major developments mean we can all live longer and much healthier lives than our ancestors. Imagine the possibilities of curing the cancers, diabetes and heart diseases of this world! Will we not see another leap in the average life expectancy?</p>
<p>Well the answer is probably yes but that doesn&#8217;t mean we won&#8217;t be challenged by a whole new breed of diseases. The point is, that if our longevity is a direct consequence of our ability (or not) to fight disease then shouldn&#8217;t we be doing all we can to prevent it?</p>
<p>One sure method is to boost your immune system, the supreme killer of infectious diseases and tumour cells. By building up the immune system we keep disease at bay and as a direct consequence increase our chances of living longer.</p>

Simply put, the immune system is a defense mechanism built from a complex set of organs, white blood cells and specialized molecules to hunt down and destroy viruses, bacteria, microbes and parasites that if left unchecked would do untold damage to the body. Capable of making more than 100 billion types of antibodies, you only have to consider what happens when an organism dies to appreciate the power of the immune system!</p>
<p>The immune system is obviously something we need to consistently build up if we don&#8217;t want to suffer the ravages of time!</p>
<h3>How to Strengthen the Immune System</h3>
<p>When considering how to strengthen the immune system, what better place to start than our diet? It is a known fact that in parts of the world where healthy, nutritious foods are in short supply, people frequently suffer poor immune systems. The lack of even one vital nutrient can cause problems with the immune system and many studies have shown this to be true. In one such study, researchers at Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, showed that a lack of vitamin B6 caused the disease fighting white blood cell count to plummet. When the people involved in the study were allowed to eat foods rich in B6 their white blood cell count was soon restored.</p>
<p>In another study in Newfoundland, Canada, scientists found that people who consumed the most of a variety of nutrients including beta-carotene, Vitamin E and C produced greater numbers of immune cells. The increased levels of anti-oxidants found in these types of diet provide an an added advantage because all cells including those belonging to the immune system are protected from free radical attack.</p>
<p>Researchers from the University of Arizona in Tucson found that beta-carotene (good sources are carrots, sweet potatoes and spinach) is highly important for producing virus killing lymphocytes and helps significantly boost immunity.</p>
<p>Both vitamin C and vitamin E help boost the immune system in their own unique way. Vitamin C (good sources are citrus fruits, cantaloupe, brussel sprouts, broccoli and radishes) is used to produce interferon, a protein that helps destroy viruses and may help to increase levels of a compound shown to keep the immune system strong called glutathione (more on this later). The body uses Vitamin E (good sources are vegetable cooking oils, wheat germ and sunflower seeds) to produce an immune protein called interleukin-2. Interleukin-2 has been shown to fight everything from bacteria and viruses to cancer cells.</p>

But, equally important is making sure we eat less of the wrong foods. A high fat diet, typical of a diet based on processed food contributes to aging the immune system. This may be because the production of cell damaging free radicals increases. There is scientific evidence to show that reduction of fat intake results in an increase of immune cell activity. In fact, for every percentage decrease in fat consumption there is a similar increase in immune cell activity.</p>
<h3>How else can we help the immune System?</h3>
<p>Even though the food you eat should probably be your main consideration when discussing how to boost your immune system, there are other factors we should be aware of. The immune system can actually be split into two parts, the non specific and the specific.</p>
<h4>The Non Specific Immune System</h4>
<p>The non specific part of the immune system attacks just about everything it comes into contact with. For example, your skin is a barrier against all sorts of bacteria. It secretes sweat and oil to prevents the growth of harmful bacteria. This gives us yet another reason why exercise is so good for us. Sweat and oil are acidic, so what better way to raise acidity levels than a vigorous workout!</p>
<p>Our modern inclination for processed foods is one reason we have forgotten how to chew. Saliva not only helps digestion but it also contains an important enzyme that destroys bacteria. Failing to chew properly makes more work for the stomach, another key component of the non specific immune system.</p>
<p>One vital component of the non specific immune system is our nose. It&#8217;s unfortunate but many people have forgotten <a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com/secrets-to-longevity-in-deep-breathing-exercises" target="_blank">how to breath</a> and air is often taken in via the mouth. This spells trouble in a couple of ways. The nose ensures warm humidified air enters the lungs. It is the main organ for filtering out particles during inhalation and it provides a first line of defense for the immune system by bringing the inhaled air into contact with mucous-coated membranes containing immunoglobulin A (IgA). But, there is another important reason behind why we should be breathing through the nose. A key to anti aging is lies in the nasal pharynx. It is a rich source of nitric oxide and the flow of air through the nose allows it to pass into the body causing dilation of the arteries allowing blood to flow more freely. Good circulation is essential for young looking skin and a lack of nitric oxide causes premature aging.</p>
<h4>The Specific Immune System</h4>
<p>The specific part of the immune system is extremely selective in nature. Depending on the type of invader, it triggers specific antibodies designed to kill only that invader. Once it has defeated a germ it remembers how to kill it, should it experience it again.</p>

<p> After all, how many different ways can minerals and vitamins be packaged and sold as the latest and greatest breakthrough in the health industry?</p>
<p> And, although I agree there might be some value in these products when you consider that the nutritional value of most the food we eat is pretty poor. I seriously doubt they&#8217;re of any more benefit than what nature can provide!</p>
<p> The fact is most supplements are probably over processed and any goodness they may contain, the body would find difficult to extract any nutritional value. We don&#8217;t question how bad refined sugar is for our body but taken in the way nature intended (as a whole fruit or vegetable) it&#8217;s delivered in just the right form.</p>
<p> Plants like humans are balanced systems. The stuff of nature we are able to eat is combined in the perfect format for human consumption. The more we process something and take away its inherent aliveness, I suspect the less nutritional value it has.</p>
<p> But let&#8217;s face it much of the fresh food (including fruits and vegetables) we buy has poor nutritional value. one reason I advocate drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juice &#8211; you are able to consume the nutrients of many plant foods in just one power drink. <p>So how is it our main objectives in life appear to be related to wealth and material possessions? <p> True happiness can only found in the <a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com/Successful-Life-Extension-through-Living-in-the-Present">here and now</a> and can never really be found by reaching a goal based on material wealth. Although goals can bring to a person favourable conditions they do not in themselves bring happiness. Neither does attachment to things. Replaying past events and justifying their current condition denies them present moment happiness. Regrets take us away from the moment and lead us to unhappiness and the notion that we have been wronged leads to bitterness and hatred. In fact spending time dwelling on the past or future often leads us down a path of negative emotions. Worry, anxiety, depression, hatred and stress etc all contribute to the aging process because their effects play out in the physical world (our body).</p>
<p> So how do we change our thoughts on happiness and become happier?</p>
<p> Learn to accept the moment and do what you have to do. Be at peace with a situation and understand the problem is not the situation but only your reaction to it. Leave the past behind and once you have made your plans let the future take care of itself. Try to live by thinking &#8216;What is&#8217; and not &#8216;what if&#8217;. Forgive yourself and those that have wronged you. Letting go of the past is one step towards lifelong happiness.</p>
<p> Be grateful for what you have and you open the door for more to come into your life. Have a purposeful life and set goals but enjoy each moment on the journey by becoming more aware. Share the fruits of your labours because identity (I have, you have not) like thoughts of the past and future can effectively block happiness. In fact, true happiness(bliss), peace and love transcend time &#8211; they are our gateway to the fountain of youth.</p>

This could be largely due to the fact we have moved away from our natural way of living to a more sedentary lifestyle. The lung capacity of a top swimmer, as of many top athletes can be up to twice that of the average person meaning fewer breaths for the required exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. In a resting state both the heart and lungs expend less energy effectively leading to a greater chance of longer life. There is strong evidence to suggest that everyone once had the ability of a modern day pearl diver, simply because our very survival depended on it. Perhaps there&#8217;s more to the mermaid myth than we might admit!</p>
<p> Pranayama, the yoga of breathing, talks of the length of breath. In the Gheranda Samitha, a yoga manuscript, the Rishi Gherand says</p>
<p> &#8216;The body measures 96 fingers (about 1 metre 80 cm). When exhaling, the stream of air roundly measures 12 fingers (20 cm from nose to hand). When singing, its length increases to 16 fingers; when walking, to 24 fingers; when sleeping, to 30 fingers; during sexual intercourse, to 36 fingers. During strenuous exercises, to even more. By gradually shortening the natural length of exhalation, we increase our vitality, whereas lengthening the exhalation reduces vitality.&#8217; </p>

<p>Slowing down the stream of air during exhalation shortens the length of breath leading to increased vitality. Although not quite the same, this is akin to developing the efficient lungs of a top athlete. However, it is achieved through conscious effort and not unconsciously through long periods of strenous exercise. Indeed, the art of breathing and its unique connection between the conscious and subconscious has given some people conscious control over other subconscious functions including heart rate, for example!</p>
<p> Breathing for most of us, is just something we take for granted. The reality is however, it is one of the most important <a href="http://www.antiagingempire.com">anti aging health secrets</a> we can learn. Most people breath incorrectly and for this reason we never quite take in the oxygen we need. Making matters worse, those that live in large cities also have to deal with pollution.</p>
<p> You might remember from your school days that the atmosphere contains about 20% Oxygen. Although many people argue that oxygen in some cities can drop as low as 10% and that deforestation etc is depleting our levels of oxygen to dangerously low levels it is simply not true. It is known that sulphur dioxide causes broncho-constriction, nitrogen dioxide damages the lining of the airways and ozone decreases the efficiency of the lungs leading to a decline in maximum oxygen uptake. Further, carbon monoxide decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Exposed to these pollutants with already poor breathing patterns it may well be we are not taking up enough oxygen.</p>
<p> The air that we breathe may not be the only way we miss vital oxygen supplies.</p>
<p> Drinking chlorinated water means a reduction in oxygen intake as does eating processed foods. It has been shown that unsaturated fatty acids are essential for the cellular utilization of oxygen. However, their shorter shelf-life has given the food industy reason to reject them in favour of synthetic fats and other less healthy processes like hydrogenation. The modern tendency for unrestrained antibiotic use not only kills bad bacteria but also the beneficial oxygen producing bacteria. It is interesting to note that cancer cells thrive in anaerobic (low oxygen) environments and several of the most common ailments facing westerners today are directly related to oxygen starvation. Asthma, emphysema and lung disease are all on the rise!</p>

<p> To begin the practice of deep breathing you should find a quiet place to relax. You can follow the routine in a sitting, lying down or even standing position. It is probably best to keep your eyes closed to avoid any distractions.</p>
<p> First slowly inhale through the nose filling the lower sections of the lungs first. Let your abdomen slowly move forward as the air begins to fill your lungs. Then fill the middle sections of your lungs letting the lower part of your rib cage expand. Finally, fill the top sections of your lungs expanding your chest slightly and letting your shoulders gently rise. Try to do all this in one continuous flowing movement.</p>
<p> After this, exhale slowly through the nose until your abdomen becomes deflated. Practice the whole cycle until you are familiar with the technique. Each time you practice gradually shorten the length of breath. That is, slow the cycle down but only to a point that remains comfortable.</p>
<p> After a period of practice you can move on to holding your breath. Although many exercises involve holding the breath after inhalation there is nothing wrong with the breath held after exhalation. Holding the breath helps regulate the heart and increases oxygen levels in the blood. Also, the psychic effects of deep breathing run deep!</p>
